From day one to six months old
I was given this as a maternity present from work and I don't know what I would have done without it. My son has used it from week one, where he would lie and gaze up at the toys, and even now that he is six months, he plays and chews on the rattle-toys every day.
Amazingly, despite playing the music at least twice every single day, I am not tearing my hair out. The only negatives are that the mat itself is quite thin so you need to put it on a carpet or rug (I suppose this is so it can be put in the washing machine). Also, on mine, there's only two sound options (music and jungle sounds), despite having three switch points - as if there's one sound option missing.
Anyhow, I would urge you to buy this! It is worth every penny and all my friends wish they had purchased this over others.
Been my baby's favourite toy for ages
I bought this after seeing good reviews and my son absolutely loves it. I bought it when he was only a few weeks old and even then he found it engaging. As time goes on, he finds more and more to be interested in moving on from looking at the various features to batting them to then actually playing with them and improving his dexterity. Now, he looks longingly at it as he's carried around the room and friends who have tried it with their babies decided they would also buy it.
Good points:
- Plenty of hanging items (elephant with rattle beads), toucan with rattle, parrot with rotating discs, soft monkey, hanging mirror, butterflies attached to the hub that hover about when the bars are knocked. You can move the toys around the mat and the attachments and some of the attachments are low enough for very young babies to touch and see them. I looked at several mats where the toys were just too high for a baby laying down to interact with. You can also attach the toys to the outside of the mat for tummy time and there is a crinkly leaf that lifts up to show a hiding bug.
- Sturdy and quality construction with with attention to detail, such as the inclusion of the felt leaves from the central hub and the lovely giraffe.
- Bright, colourful fabric that cleans up well (the mat has to be washed as a delicate on a cold wash) and hasn't incurred any shrinkage, fading, etc
- Music and sounds that aren't too annoying, as well as four lights under the hub that fade on and off in time with the sounds. The rainforest sounds are actually very nice. The music is bearable. There are 3 settings: rainforest sounds, music and music started by the bars being struck. There are two volume levels. I rarely have it on the loudest setting and the batteries have lasted ages (C batteries).
- The bars are far enough apart to put a change mat in between to keep your little one occupied while you change their nappy.
Bad points:
- As a previous reviewer said, once the bars have been put together using the hub it's impossible to detach them again without wondering if you're going to permanently damage it! You can take the bars apart from each other to the point where they can be folded together and it can still all be put in its original bag. I can't do the middle popper up on the bag, but it's still travelled well out and about.
- The mat is thinner than some others so you can imagine it might get a bit uncomfy after a while. Needs to be placed on carpet or a rug. It is easier, however, for babies to move themselves around on the mat.
- It would've been nice to have the complete package and have a head and shoulder support for tummy time. I bought another mat for this and don't use the mat the support came with at all. It would also be nice if the butterflies went around by themselves, but it can give older babies something more to reach for.
I have no doubts about how good this product is and would quite happily recommend it to anyone. Well worth the money. I bought it from babycity through Amazon and the service was excellent.
A nice playmat. but takes up space
Overall this is a nice playmat. It's well made, sturdy and seems to use high quality materials. The colours are bright and vibrant for baby and the music options (music or rainforest sounds) are pleasing to the ear. Most of the hanging objects including the mirror are detachable and moveable, so you can change the layout to suit baby. As others have said, the butterflies at the top do not rotate automatically, you have to push them yourself.
Downsides: The mat needs a rug or carpet underneath as it is quite thin. Also beware that once the two overhead bars and the leaves are snapped into place, there seems to be no way of taking them apart again. For storage, you take off the overhead bars, and the lower bar can be rotated to line up with the upper bar (the one with the giraffe). Basically, once you assemble the mat, you can never get it back into the packaging again, so you will need some space to store it.

Looking for a holiday toy for your toddler that blends physical activity with engaging learning activities? Want to find a toy that will keep your child busy and happy all through the cold winter months? Searching for that one special toy that provides your toddler with both hours of exercise and engaging fun?
If you answered yes to any of the above, you may already be considering the Fisher Price Smart Cycle for your toddler this holiday season. The Smart Cycle claims to provide both physical activity (by riding a stationary bike), and educational fun (through its learning games/adventure software). This "Physical Learning Arcade System" from Mattel Inc. was released in 2007 and subsequently won two awards at the Toy Industry Association's Annual Toy of the Year Awards in 2008. It is targeted at 3-6 year old toddlers.
With the economy in a slump, parents on a tight budget will not be purchasing as many toys for their children as they would like this holiday season. What this means is that as a parent, you will probably be focusing on those toys that will give you the biggest bang for your buck. With so many holiday toy options available this season, you may be asking yourself: Is this particular toy worth considering? Does it live up to its marketing hype? Will my child really use and enjoy it?
In order to help you with your decision, here are a few reviews of the Fisher Price Smart Cycle from parenting sites online.
The Fisher Price Smart Cycle is currently listed as the number one toy in About.com's list of Top Toddler Toys. According to the review on this site, the Smart Cycle is "a gigantic step above the other TV and video games available for toddlers today" and points out that the Smart Cycle provides entertainment while making kids exercise at the same time.
The Smart Cycle also received five out of five stars from the Viewpoints.com toy reviews page. One parent reviewer commented that by using the Smart Cycle their child is "being active, learning numbers and letters and having fun."
According to GrandkidsGiftGuide.com, kids can use the Smart Cycle to get great exercise as they cycle their way through stimulating educational video games that involve colors, numbers and letter recognition. The games teach children to 'catch' letters of the alphabet, review numbers at "Math Mountain," and learn their shapes at "Shape Lake" as they cycle through each of these virtual environments.
Additional game cartridges allow kids to interact with their favorite characters - Dora the Explorer, Sponge Bob Square Pants, Thomas the train, Scooby Doo, Elmo and Barbie - as they go on exciting learning adventures together.
The final verdict? The Fisher Price Smart Cycle appears to live up to its marketing hype. This toy provides an effective balance of activities for your child as it combines healthy exercise and engaging learning at the same time. It's no wonder that Parenting Magazine chose the Fisher Price Smart Cycle as one of their Best Toys of 2007.

It is human nature to push ourselves to the limits. It is a basic survival tactic, stemming back to our hunter gatherer days, and the times when we ventured into uncharted territory with dangerous beasts, poisonous snakes, impenetrable forests and hostile landscapes. This goes a long way to explaining our yearning for adventure, and this is what makes us feel glad to be alive.
Some of us spend our weekends participating in extreme sports, rock climbing, scuba diving or kayaking in fast flowing rivers. Some of us are happy to potter around the garden dead-heading the roses, or knitting by the fire side. But there is always a small voice in our heads niggling away, telling us that we could be the ones out there with the wind in our hair as we leap from a plane with our parachutes strapped to our backs.
We could be enjoying the thrill of a new experience rather than plodding through our predictable day. We could be allowing our inner child the freedom to run and jump, instead of having a nice cup of tea and staring out of the window at the world. It is so much more fun to be a participant than a spectator. Experience days offer us all the chance to try out something that we have never done before. The difficulty is nothing to do with finding the courage to do something, but to decide which of the many experience days to try first.
Experience days put the sparkle back into your life and a spring in your step, and I can assure you that you will want to have a go at all of the experience days that you can fit into your spare time, once you get started. If you feel a bit frazzled and over worked, there are many different pampering experience days for you to enjoy. Massages and make overs are just the tip of the iceberg, and if you do not want to enjoy these on your own, there are plenty of experience days designed for two people.
If you need a challenge and are up for more than a bit of excitement, take a look at the scary experience days which are guaranteed to have you punching the air with joy. Maybe you fancy a romantic night out for you and your beloved, without the added adrenalin. Who would not enjoy a West End theatre show and meal with overnight stay in a London hotel with breakfast? You can even enjoy a romantic cruise down the River Thames if that is the pace that you wish to live your life. Soothing though it is, it is still an adventure, as you are doing something new, and you will find yourself returning for more experience days again and again.

If you want to enjoy one of the many experience days and have an adventure with the family, you can take your partner and kids along to a paint balling experience for 4, where you can all romp about firing paint pellets at each other. With 100 paint balls to fire, and lunch as well, this adventure will be appreciated and enjoyed by all the family.
This is so much more fun than doing the weekly shopping, so get out there and go wild. Experience days just for kids mean that mums and dads can watch their offspring enjoy something new. A Cowboy Adventure for Kids gives your child the opportunity to learn how to ride western style in the safety of an arena, followed by a cowboy lunch of burgers and beans. This is a fabulous birthday gift with a difference, and one that everyone will enjoy.
If you are a big fan of nature but want to see something out of the ordinary, a Dolphin Watching for Two is one of the wonderful and inspiring experience days that will stay in your mind for a long time. View the beautiful bottle nosed dolphins from the comfort of a boat, along the Moray Firth and watch them as they play and swim alongside the boat. Life is one big adventure, so get stuck in and enjoy yourself.
